Chattanooga, Tennessee
Our work in Chattanooga spans a decade, and represents the best of our pre-approved planning and developer coaching. From single-story cottages to sixplex courts, Chattanooga is embracing the missing middle.
Chattanooga has benefited from a long partnership between CNE, the Lyndhurst Foundation and the Benwood Foundation who have worked together over the years to develop affordable housing. With the help of electric housing, these foundations were able to build over 180 units of housing in the Ridgedale and Highland Park neighborhoods.
Charette +
Pre-Approved Plans
Through a charrette collaborating with local professionals, we created a set of missing middle prototype buildings including duplexes, multiplexes of 4-12 units, live/ work buildings, and cottage courts.
After the charrette, the design team helped to refine the site plan for the Ridgedale node in order to help CNE move forward with development.
Missing Middle Housing
For over a decade, we worked with the non-profit group Chattanooga Neighborhood Evolution to develop over 180 units of small to middle scale housing.

The Future of Chattanooga Development
The rise in development costs across the country is a shared challenge, however there are opportunities in Chattanooga for this successful partnership to continue to find creative solutions for new development to move forward.
The success of Chattanooga is our proof of concept. As missing middle housing has moved from a new idea to a more common infill strategy, the Chattanooga experience shows what can happen with consistent effort over time.
